If you go down to the museum today….

The National Army Museum in Chelsea has a very fine art collection of its own, but their current exhibition draws gems from other sources to paint a compelling picture of the British Army in the 19th century. A particular highlight for anyone who enjoys the elegance of a bell-topped shako is ‘The 6th (1st Royal Warwickshires) Regiment of Foot on exercise while stationed at Portsmouth, 1843’ by Daniel Cunliffe.

I’d only recently been made aware of this painting on a ITSC Zoom call, so it was a delight to turn a corner and be greeted by it in the flesh. The level of detail and observation are superb, and a toy solider painters dream.
